Chelsea tell Inter Milan they can keep Romelu Lukaku for second loan season

Romelu Lukaku will be allowed to stay on loan at Inter Milan for a second season by Chelsea if his return to Italy is a success.

Inter paid around £7million to take Lukaku on loan for the season, following an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge for the striker.

Chelsea have only announced a 12-month deal and head coach Thomas Tuchel has claimed the club must remain open to the fact that Lukaku could come back.

But Telegraph Sport understands that there is already a broad proposal for Lukaku to stay at Inter for a second season under similar terms to those that were agreed this summer.

That would see Chelsea net another loan fee for the 29-year-old and the club are confident they can avoid another saga regarding his future.

The hope inside Chelsea and Inter is that after two years on loan, when he will have two years remaining on his contract, the Italian club will be able to afford to finance a permanent deal for Lukaku.

Lukaku cost Chelsea £97.5m last year and the Stamford Bridge club are still likely to make a big loss on their club record signing.

But they are saving his £325,000-a-week wages while he is at Inter and have at least secured a small fee for sending him on loan with the prospect of a second year’s loan to follow.

Meanwhile, Jorginho has revealed the role he played in convincing Kalidou Koulibaly to join him at Chelsea.

Jorginho and Koulibaly were former team-mates at Napoli and have linked up at Stamford Bridge after the defender made a £34m summer move to England.

Asked if he helped to make up Koulibaly’s mind, Jorginho said: “I pushed! I was like ‘come on, come to Chelsea’. And he was like ‘ah yeah I would like to’. I said ‘just come because it has been a long time since we played together’.

“It probably started last year. It was a lot. we always said as a joke, ‘let’s play together again, let’s play together again.’ But, it never happened properly and when we saw ‘okay maybe it’s not a joke anymore’ we started to be more serious about it.”

Jorginho is confident Chelsea have made an excellent signing and that 31-year-old Koulibaly will quickly settle into the Premier League.

“He is an experienced player. not just on the pitch,” said Jorginho. “You will see he is a brilliant defender, strong, fast, he plays on the ball. But as a guy, a person in the changing room he is just amazing. He is such a nice guy and brings a lot to this club.

“I think he was the best choice and I said before when the season was going to end that the first name it has to be is Kalidou Koulibaly. Because of the player he is and person he is in the changing room, he can just add to the club and team-mates.”

Koulibaly had taken John Terry’s old number 26 in pre-season and Jorginho added: “He has a big personality and I am pretty sure and hope so much that he does so well. I hope the number brings him luck.”
